NIN Verification: How to Check and Retrieve Your National Identification Number

By Comparex Team2026-04-138 min read

The National Identification Number (NIN) has become one of the most important identity documents in Nigeria. Required for SIM registration, bank accounts, passport applications, and government services, here is your complete guide.

What Is NIN?

NIN is an 11-digit unique number assigned to every Nigerian citizen and legal resident by NIMC (National Identity Management Commission). Unlike BVN which is financial-only, NIN is a universal identity number for all government and private sector identification purposes.

How to Check Your NIN

Method 1: USSD

Dial *346# from any phone. Follow the prompts to retrieve your NIN. This works even on phones not linked to your NIN.

Method 2: NIMC Mobile App

Download the NIMC Mobile ID app from the Play Store or App Store. Sign in with your phone number and retrieve your NIN and digital ID.

Method 3: NIMC Portal

Visit the NIMC self-service portal at nimc.gov.ng to check your enrollment status and retrieve your NIN.

Method 4: SMS

No current SMS retrieval method is active. Use USSD or the app instead.

How to Register for NIN

If you do not have a NIN yet:

  1. **Visit a NIMC enrollment center** -- find the nearest one at nimc.gov.ng
  1. **Bring supporting documents:**

- Birth certificate or age declaration

- Valid passport, driver's license, or voter's card

- Utility bill for proof of address (optional)

  1. **Biometric capture**: Fingerprints (all 10 fingers), facial photo, iris scan
  1. **Receive your slip**: You get a temporary NIN slip immediately
  1. **Collect NIN**: Your 11-digit NIN is assigned and sent via SMS

How to Link NIN to Your SIM

The NIN-SIM linkage is mandatory in Nigeria. Here is how to do it for each network:

MTN

Dial *785*NIN# from your MTN line, or send your NIN to 785 via SMS.

Airtel

Dial *121*1# and follow the prompts, or send NIN to 109 via SMS.

Glo

Dial *109*NIN# from your Glo line.

9mobile

Dial *200*8*NIN# from your 9mobile line.

Common NIN Problems

NIN Not Found

If *346# says your NIN is not found, you may not have completed enrollment. Visit a NIMC center to check.

Name Mismatch

If your name on NIN does not match other documents, visit a NIMC center with your original enrollment slip and correct documents.

Lost NIN Slip

Your NIN is not lost -- just the slip. Dial *346# to retrieve the number, and download the NIMC Mobile ID app for a digital copy.

SIM Linkage Failed

This usually means the name on your NIN does not match the name registered with your mobile network. Update your SIM registration first.

NIN for International Travel

NIN is now required for:

  • Nigerian passport applications and renewals
  • Visa applications (some embassies request it)
  • International SIM registration when porting your number

Protecting Your NIN

Like BVN, your NIN contains personal information. Do not share it unnecessarily:

  • Only provide NIN when officially required (bank KYC, SIM registration, government forms)
  • Never share via social media or public channels
  • Be wary of unofficial "NIN correction" agents -- use official NIMC centers only

Our Take

NIN is Nigeria's attempt at a unified national ID system, and despite infrastructure challenges, it is increasingly essential for daily life. Get enrolled if you have not, keep your details updated, and save your NIN somewhere secure.
